Event ID 521--Backup Operations on Windows 7  failing
My Backup is failing as the Volume Shadow Copy Service has an error with the code (0x80042306). Going via the Event Viewer I am invited to "Resolve any failures you find" . I dont know what the next steps are in order to provide a solution.

Before going any further, I would like to confirm the following issues: 1) Is your computer on a server or any networks? 2) Does the issue appear since Windows 7 installed on your computer? If not, when did you get this error code? Were you performing a system image or general backup operation? Were you trying to backup to local hard drive or to network folder? At this point, please try the following suggestions to narrow down the root causes of the issue. Please manually run a backup to check if the backup will success. If the backup fails, there might be some problems with VSS. Please continue the troubleshooting. a. Test in Clean Boot b. Run Check Disk Utility to make sure that there are no errors on your hard drive. 1. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks) in the Search bar. 2. Right click on the search result listed upper and click Run as Administrator. 3. In the open command window, input the following command and press Enter Key after it. Chkdsk /f /r 4. Please type Y and press Enter. 5. Please restart the computer and let the tool check all drives on the computer. c. Check VSS provider Check to see if there are any non-standard providers that are causing the problem when performing the VSS snapshot. To do this, go to the command-line and execute the following command "vssadmin list providers". If there are any non-standard providers listed, consider uninstalling them. Note that the Microsoft default providers are generally very reliable, so uninstalling 3rd party providers may solve the problem. If the "vssadmin list providers" command hangs, it is likely that a newly installed VSS provider is malfunctioning. We have seen this with certain imaging products. In this case, uninstall these products to resolve the issue. d. Ensure that the backup is not running at the same time as another backup as the custom provider may only allow one snap-shot at a time. e. Check the status of the system by following these steps:Go to the Registry Editor and locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\SetupEnsure that the following registry values are set to 0:SystemSetupInProgress UpgradeInProgress

Hi Judy, I fell at the first hurdle. When performing a clean boot on the Services tab>clicked the Hide all Microsoft services check box but the Disable all box was not available.. I gave up on clean boot and followed the remaining suggestions successfully. I have now run a back up which seems ok with no reference to VSS. I am not entirely convinced but we shall see. The Task Manager says its unable to start the VSS. Access is denied. Hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving. We dont get it in the UK. I wonder why ? Richard

Hi Richard, Thank you for your kind regards. Do you mean, 1.You can do a small backup successfully without any problem and no error codes refers to VSS?2.You are now in UK, the computer is not on a server and the issue does not occur? Please let me know. If the answer are Yes, the issue can occur because one of the following issues. 1.The first time when trying to perform a system image to a hard drive failed may be caused by the big size of the file. Please understand that it is possible that the backup process can be interrupted due to its big size. 2.In addition, if your computer cannot do a backup if it is on a server, it can occur because some configurations which set on server block the backup as well. Judy :)

Hi Judy The answers to your first two questions are "Yes". I will keep your second two points in mind should I have problems in the future. Regards, Richard.
